Team-Building Ideas for Your Corporate Retreat in the Texas Hill Country

Oct 2, 2026

Horseshoe Bay Resort in the Texas Hill Country is set on 10,000 acres along Lake LBJ, a scenic hour and a half drive from Austin, and gives you the two things a retreat needs in the same place: rooms and meeting space that let people do serious work, and a deep bench of experiences steps away.

Below are the team-building ideas we see work best for corporate groups, organized by what you are trying to accomplish.

Build Something that Matters

1. Build bikes for kids who need them. The Charity Bike Build is a timed competition with real stakes: teams race to assemble bicycles, and when the tools go down the bikes go to organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters. It works for groups of 10 to 80, fits in a two-hour window, and gives your people a story they will want to share
on their own LinkedIn.

2. Assemble care kits for local families. Helping Hands pairs teams with a Hill Country charity to pack personal care kits and write notes of encouragement. It is quieter than the bike build and easier to run in a meeting room, which makes it a strong Day 1 opener for groups that need to warm up before they compete.

3. Engineer a boat out of pool noodles. Build a Boat hands each team of six inner tubes, rope, pool noodles and duct tape, then asks them to float a teammate across Lake LBJ. Someone will get wet. That is the point; the engineers and the dreamers both find out quickly how the other half thinks.

Learn a Hill Country Craft

4. Learn to smoke a Texas brisket. In the Texas BBQ class on Live Oak Lawn, resort chefs teach the offset-smoking fundamentals that Central Texas is known for: wood selection, fire management, brisket prep, and plating. Groups sample ribs, jalapeño sausage, and cornbread along the way. Patience and process, taught over live fire, is about as Hill Country as a lesson gets.

5. Fire pizzas in a wood-burning oven. The Wood Fire Pizza session gives teams dough, sauce, and toppings and a chef to show them how a Neapolitan pie comes together. It is the most relaxed of the culinary options and pairs well with a late-afternoon slot.

6. Compete in a Cupcake Challenge. Led by the resort’s pastry chef, this is piping technique and decoration under a clock, judged on creativity. Small groups (10 to 25) do best, and it lands well with teams that would rather build something than throw something.

Compete Like a Texan

7. Shoot clays at the Horseshoe Bay Sporting Club. The newest addition to the resort’s group lineup, the Sporting Club offers helice, 5-stand, flurry, pistol sporting clays, and carbine with expert instruction followed by gathering in a renovated mid-century clubhouse with a full bar, lounge, and Trophy Room for the debrief. This is the one to book for executive outings and client-facing groups.

8. Drive a Ford Bronco off-road. Bronco Off-Roadeo at Grey Wolf Ranch, minutes from the resort, puts your people behind the wheel on rock climbs, hill descents, and water crossings with professional trail guides. No prior experience required, which is what makes it a great equalizer across job titles. Choose a four- or eight-hour session.

9. Run the Giant Texas Challenge. Think Amazing Race with a mechanical bull. Emcees and facilitators guide teams through horseshoes, bull roping, football throws, and Nerf shootouts. It scales from 8 to 100 people and is the highest-energy option on this list.

10. Stage a Horseshoe Bay Olympics. Pick four events, physical or mental, from a menu that includes trivia, putting challenges, marble runs, and blindfold obstacle courses. Because you choose the mix, you can tune it for a group of analysts, creatives, or sales teams.

11. Take over the Whitewater Putting Course. A private buyout of the 18-hole putting course turns networking into something people actually want to do. Add the Whitewater Putting Challenge (blindfold putt, bottoms-up putt) for structure or book the glow-in-the-dark version for an after-dinner surprise.

12. Play tennis or pickleball at Mouratoglou. The resort is home to the first U.S. location of the Mouratoglou Tennis Center, with 26 courts including clay, hard, and 14 dedicated pickleball courts lit for night play. Pickleball instruction is the easiest way to get 40 people of mixed ability laughing on a court within an hour.

Get Out on Lake LBJ

13. Race a paddleboard and kayak relay. Teams swap paddlers at the shore and race to the buoy and back against the clock. Follow it with lunch at the Waterfront Bar & Grill restaurant and you have a full afternoon that costs almost nothing in planning time.

14. Charter a guided fishing tour. Local guides who know the Highland Lakes take small groups out on Lake LBJ for a half or full day, poles and bait included. Ideal for a leadership team that wants unhurried time together.

15. Take the evening onto the Lady Bird II. The resort’s dining yacht carries 30 to 85 guests with captain, crew, catering, and entertainment. Two themed evenings are worth knowing about: the Louisiana Blues Cruise (Cajun boiled Gulf shrimp, blues on deck) and Bubbles & Bourbon (raw bar, tenderloin, Texas bourbon, and a cigar roller at sunset). One night on the water does the work of a dozen conference room mixers.

Reset the Room

16. Start the day with a sound bowl session. A guided breathwork and sound-bowl meditation is 30 to 60 minutes of genuine quiet before a heavy agenda. Teams that arrive from three time zones notice the difference.

17. Organize a Hill Country fun run. A custom 5K or 10K along the lake, with set-up and water stations handled by the resort. Book at least four weeks ahead and let the team decide the theme.

18. Book a private fitness class. Sunrise yoga on a lakeside lawn, water aerobics at the pool, or a boot camp for the group that asks.

Keep it Going After Dark

19. Host Casino Night. Texas Hold ‘Em or full casino tables with professional dealers, theatrical lighting, and optional food stations. No money changes hands, but reputations do.

20. Throw a silent disco or a lip sync battle. Both are run by a live DJ or emcee. The lip sync battle in particular is the fastest known method for finding out which quiet colleague has been hiding a stage presence.

21. End at the fire pit. S’mores around the resort’s fire pits layered with sea salt, white chocolate, and other upgrade favorites, are the low-effort closer that people remember. Pair it with a poolside movie on the 120-inch inflatable screen if the group skews family.
The full lineup, with group sizes and durations, are provided in the resort’s Group Activity Guide.

How to Build the Agenda

The retreats that work follow a simple rhythm: one activity with purpose, one with a pulse, and real work in between. A two-night program might look like this.

Purpose first, then play. Groups that open with the Charity Bike Build or Helping Hands arrive at the competitive events already on the same side.

Protect the mornings. Meeting work goes before lunch, when attention is highest; the lake, the courts, and the fire pits belong to late afternoon and evening.

Let the leadership team disappear for a half-day. The Sporting Club and Bronco Off-Roadeo are built for eight to twenty people who need to talk without an audience.

The meeting side is built to hold the plan. The 12,000-square-foot Granite Ballroom anchors nine additional meeting rooms, and the new Live Oak Pavilion, completed in early 2026, gives you an indoor-outdoor room for the sessions that should not feel like sessions.

Lakeside lawns such as Falls Point and Shoreline handle receptions. In-house A/V and in-house catering mean one contract, one contact, and no vendor chase.

Teams stay in the Tower, the Palm Villas, or the waterfront Signature Residences, with three Robert Trent Jones Sr. golf courses, a marina, and a spa on property for the free hours. Full venue details are available in the Meetings & Events Guide.
